Inside Skyguide: A Unique Experience for the European Class at Geneva Airport
We began with a tour of the air control center, where air traffic controllers monitor airplanes in real time. They are responsible for managing each aircraft’s altitude and trajectory, as the airspace is organized into several layers. As we walked through the center, we could both hear and see the real‑time exchanges between the controllers and the pilots, which made the experience even more impressive. The control center has no daylight because natural light could reflect on the screens and reduce visibility, something that could be dangerous in such a high‑precision environment, it is also extremely quiet. The external control tower is dedicated solely to the visual supervision of approach, landing, and take‑off operations, in other words, the core of air traffic management takes place in the control center.
Then we visited the flight simulator. There were huge screens all around us, creating an immersive environment. The staff explained several rules about airplane take‑off. For example, small planes must take off before larger ones because big aircraft generate strong turbulence.
This visit was interesting, dynamic and very enriching. We learned a lot about how airplanes are managed and how essential air traffic controllers are to ensuring flight safety. It was an experience that opened our eyes to the precision, calm, and expertise behind every journey in the sky.
